Tocaya Organica
Santa Monica-based Tocaya Organica opened its second Arizona location on May 5, 2019, in Scottsdale Fashion Square. I feel the term Fresh Mex was overused in the ‘90’s, so I will describe this concept as Healthy Modern Mex. Tocaya Organica offers counter-service in a hip, contemporary space with soothing color tones. Vegans, vegatarians and carnivores alike will be pleased by the wide range of options. You can select among several options of salads, tacos, bowls and burritos, and customize it with a protein (think beef, chicken, tofu) and a few choices of cheese, including a vegan chipotle crema that is quite tasty. Plus, there are aguas frescas and margaritas. On the two occasions where I have eaten at Tocaya Organica, I ordered the Fajita Del Rey Bowl with Vegan Picadillo (Beyond Meat with veggies and spices), and the Black Bean and Quinoa Bowl with Adobo Tofu. To give you examples of other options , try the Tulum Tacos with red onion and habanero, charred bell peppers, grilled pineapple with chicken tinga, the Guiltless Gluten Free Burrito on a coconut and cassava flour tortilla, or a shredded Kale & Quinoa Salad. Either way, I say olé!!

The Sicilian Baker
I have written in the past about the Sicilian Butcher (see posts here and here) run by the dynamic Maggiore Group with father and son duo, Tomaso and Joey Maggiore. It should come as no surprise that I am thrilled to tell you about the opening of The Sicilian Baker, a quaint bakery attached to the southern end of The Sicilian Butcher. While it has been open since March, I have taken my time to let the crowds calm down before visiting, as there had been reports of lines wrapping around the shopping center. And it is easy to see why. In a light and airy space, The Sicilian Baker offers a selection of beautiful, sophisticated and, at times, indulgent delicacies. However, the thing to order would have to be the Sicilian cannoli. It comes in a mini, regular, and an extra large size. You have a choice of cannoli wrap flavors and Sicilian ricotta cream fillings. Without a doubt, worth the trek to North Scottsdale. And if you are lucky, you could bump into the ever charming Maggiore men.

Dog Haus
The Scottsdale Quarter has a new addition in the form of Pasadena based gourmet hot dog concept called Dog Haus. Offering gourmet dogs, sausages, hamburgers and local beer on tap, the Dog Haus sits in a 1,700 square foot space across from Kona Grill. Dog Haus stands out from other fast casual concepts by focusing on quality, providing all-beef dogs, hand-crafted sausages with no added nitrates, and100% Angus beef in their burgers. Plus, they offer Beyond Sausage and the Impossible Burger 2.0, all served on grilled King’s Hawaiian rolls. I had the Beyond Brat with sauerkraut, onions and spicy brown mustard, tater tots with a selection of dips, like the miso ranch, chipotle aioli and spicy basil aioli, and the Impossible Burger Sliders. It is frankly too good to pass up (pun intended!). Happy Weekend! xoM
