When the temperatures reach 110 in Phoenix and Tucson, many citizens head for the hills, literally, to escape the heat. A short two-hour drive up I-17 from Phoenix brings you to Flagstaff, a destination that has increasingly become more than just a stopover on the way to the Grand Canyon. Situated at an elevation of 7,000 feet, Flagstaff is surrounded by the stunning San Francisco Peaks, a volcanic mountain range that includes Humphreys Peak, the highest point in Arizona at 12,637 feet.
Founded as a railroad hub in the late 19th century, Flagstaff boasts a historic downtown that still echoes the past with its preserved buildings and charming atmosphere. As the gateway to Northern Arizona’s natural wonders, Flagstaff offers an array of outdoor activities year-round, thanks to its vast forests, ancient volcanic fields, and proximity to the Grand Canyon.
In the summer, Flagstaff is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, offering hiking, mountain biking, and scenic drives through the surrounding forests and mountains. Festivals and events fill the warm months, bringing the community together to celebrate the arts, culture, and the great outdoors. In winter, Flagstaff transforms into a snowy paradise with Arizona Snowbowl, a ski resort just a short drive from the city. Its diverse terrain and stunning views make it a winter wonderland that adds a different dimension to Flagstaff’s appeal.
Developers and chefs have been taking note, renovating 1950s-era motels into chic hotels and converting old buildings into restaurants and attractive inns. With a burgeoning food scene, Flagstaff is becoming an appealing alternative to Sedona. It is also closer to some of Northern Arizona’s great attractions, such as the Painted Desert and Meteor Crater. If you’ve never been to Flagstaff before or are new to its vibrant scene, you’re in for a treat. Make sure to save my Flagstaff city guide to discover the best places to eat, drink, and explore in this charming and dynamic city.
