“Where should I stay when visiting Phoenix?” is one of the most frequently asked questions. And my answer is usually something like, “It depends on what you want to do and what part of town you want to be in.” The Phoenix area has a history of being home to some of the most luxurious and unique resorts, each offering a distinctive desert experience. Whether you’re looking for a tranquil retreat, a luxurious spa experience, or a place to enjoy world-class golf, I have compiled a list of resorts with something for everyone. I hope you enjoy my Local’s Guide to the best resorts in Phoenix, and please drop me a line in the comment box if you have more suggestions. I have stayed at all these resorts at one time or another over my 30 years living in Arizona, except the three newer ones, so I can help you find the right one for you! xoM
Andaz Scottsdale Resort & Bungalows
Just around the corner from our house in the heart of Scottsdale, the Andaz is a modern, mid-century design hotel that is part of the Hyatt group. The resort features spacious bungalows, three beautiful pools, and the Palo Verde Spa & Apothecary, which offers unique desert-inspired treatments with intoxicating names such as the Sonoran Clay Wrap and the Desert Ritual. The onsite restaurant, Weft & Warp, serves delicious, locally sourced Mediterranean-inspired dishes that delight your taste buds.
PRO TIP: Arrive in style with Andaz’s partnership with the private aviation company XO. Guests at Andaz Scottsdale Resort & Bungalows will receive exclusive pricing for XO’s premium charter flight experiences into the nearby Scottsdale Airport.
The Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain
Perched on the northern slope of Camelback Mountain, The Sanctuary offers stunning views of Piestewa Peak and Mummy Mountain in an intimate atmosphere. This boutique resort is known for its exceptional spa, featuring Asian-inspired treatments, and its award-winning restaurant, elements, helmed by renowned Chef Beau MacMillan. Its comfortable mid-century modern casitas and breathtaking scenery make it the perfect place for a romantic getaway.
PRO TIP: If you are not in the mood for a large sit-down dinner, the jade bar at The Sanctuary has always been a favorite of mine. It offers delicious bites such as the stunning crudité platter and the American Wagyu burger.
The Phoenician, a Luxury Collection Resort
Since its opening in October 1988, The Phoenician has been the epitome of luxury in the Valley. Set against the backdrop of Camelback Mountain, this resort offers something for everyone, from the championship golf course to the stunning pools and the recently renovated state-of-the-art spa. Developer Charles Keating set out to create Arizona’s first true luxury resort, importing Carrera marble for the lobby, etching the ceilings in 24-karat gold, and importing 1 million dollars worth of Italian mother-of-pearl tiles to grace the bottom of a serenity pool. The Phoenician offers a variety of dining options, including the more casual Mowry & Cotton to the fine dining experience at J&G Steakhouse, which replaced the inimitable Mary Elaine’s restaurant. I miss the good old days and the fact that Mary Elains was the only establishment in AZ with a dress code requiring men to wear a coat and tie. PRO TIP: For the ultimate luxury, book a room at the 60-room boutique hotel within The Phoenician, The Canyon Suites.
Arizona Biltmore, A Waldorf Astoria Resort
The Arizona Biltmore is a historic gem known as the “Jewel of the Desert.” Now, with a whopping 701 guest rooms, this iconic resort has hosted countless celebrities and dignitaries since it opened in 1929. With its distinctive Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired architecture, lush gardens, and multiple pools (including a 65-foot tall twisting waterslide), the Biltmore offers a unique blend of history and modern luxury.
PRO TIP: Enjoy a Tequila Sunrise at the stunning Wright’s Bar, which is known for inventing this iconic cocktail. Then savor a meal at Renata’s Hearth, where you can enjoy dishes inspired by high-end Latin cuisine, all in a setting that radiates timeless sophistication.
Hermosa Inn
For a more intimate experience, the Hermosa Inn in Paradise Valley is a lovely adobe structure hidden in the bucolic Paradise Valley neighborhood. Perfect for those seeking a tranquil escape with a touch of Southwestern charm, this boutique hotel, originally built in the 1930s, is a charming and peaceful retreat. The on-site restaurant, Lon’s at the Hermosa (named for Western painter from AZ Lon Megargee), is a local favorite known for its farm-to-table cuisine and beautiful patio dining.
PRO TIP: Winter is my favorite time of year to eat at Lon’s. I love to sit outside on the patio, surrounded by the warmth of the chimineas (earthenware freestanding fireplaces) that emit intoxicating woodsy aromas. It’s hard to beat.
Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North
Located in the northernmost part of Scottsdale, closer to Carefree, the Four Seasons offers a luxurious escape focused on the natural beauty of the Sonoran Desert. The resort features adobe casitas, a world-class spa, and access to some of the best golf courses in Arizona, including nearby Troon North. The on-site restaurant, Talavera, offers delicious Spanish-inspired cuisine like their signature Talavera paella and stuffed Ibérico pork.
PRO TIP: My favorite thing to do at the Four Seasons is a sunrise hike along the 4-mile out-and-back trail along Pinnacle Peak, but the concierge can arrange some fantastic adventures like an off-road mountain bike adventure in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve, day trips to Sedona for an Arizona wine tasting experience, and trips to the Grand Canyon.
The Camelback Inn, A JW Marriott Resort & Spa
The Camelback Inn opened on Dec. 15, 1936, with 75 casitas constructed with handmade adobe bricks. The clock above the entrance is set to 12:25, symbolizing the moment the resort welcomed its first guests and coining the phrase “Where Time Stands Still.” Currently with 435 casitas and rooms spread along the desert (each with a patio), the Camelback Inn features a top-notch spa, several dining options, including the famous Lincoln Steakhouse & Bar, and easy access to the hiking trails of Camelback Mountain and nearby Mummy Mountain. It is easy to see why, to this day, Bill Marriott, the company’s longest-serving CEO and current chairman of the board, celebrates each birthday there.
PRO TIP: Locals love the views and patio at Rita’s Cantina and Bar, which is the ideal spot to sip margaritas and nosh on nachos.
JW Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge Resort & Spa
Located at the northern edge of Phoenix, the JW Marriott Desert Ridge is a fantastic choice for those seeking a family-friendly option. This expansive resort features The Revive Spa, several dining options, a championship golf course, and multiple pools, including a lazy river. AquaRidge WaterPark has undergone significant enhancements, which include a lazy river, signature pools with cabanas, three new multi-story water slides, multiple dining poolside options, and Sky Island, an exclusive adult-only pool. The signature restaurants are helmed by “Top Chef” alum Angelo Sosa: Tía Carmen, inspired by his aunt’s passion for authentic flavors, and Kembara, embracing the Asian street food culture Chef Sosa encountered during his travel adventures.
PRO TIP: Pickleball enthusiasts will be happy to know about the brand new Pickleball Center, featuring 17 lighted courts and a full-service pro shop carrying a large selection of apparel and equipment. The Center offers hourly court time, group instruction, one-on-one instruction, and a Certified Pickleball instructor.
Mountain Shadows Resort Scottsdale
In 1959, the Mountain Shadows Resort opened its doors in Paradise Valley, nestled in the shadow of Camelback Mountain and Mummy Mountain. The resort earned its name from the shadows cast by the iconic silhouettes each afternoon. The hotel has catered to international travelers, visiting families, and Hollywood stars. Mountain Shadows Resort became a part of entertainment history when it was used as the primary backdrop for “The Brothers Brannagan,” a detective television series. The original resort was completely torn down and rebuilt, opening in 2017. Guests can enjoy the beautiful pool, a high-tech fitness center, and the Hearth ’61 restaurant, which offers delicious cuisine focusing on local ingredients. PRO TIP: If you like golf but don’t have all day to play? The Short Course at Mountain Shadows offers 18 holes of par-3 golf, a large practice putting green, and a bonus wager hole. After a round, visit Rusty’s for grille fare and brews inside and on the patio. Read more about Mountain Shadows in a post from 2021 here.
The Scottsdale Resort and Spa, Curio Collection by Hilton
The Scottsdale Resort and Spa, part of the Curio Collection by Hilton, just underwent a major renovation to offer a blend of modern luxury and Southwestern charm. This resort is tucked into a quiet area of Scottsdale and features beautifully landscaped grounds, spacious and well-appointed rooms, and a variety of dining options, including La Fogata, Scottsdale Resort’s signature restaurant that embodies the essence of Sonoran fare with locally sourced ingredients, open flame creations, and outstanding Southwest flavors. The resort’s Luna Spa provides a range of rejuvenating treatments, perfect for a relaxing getaway.
PRO TIP: If you find yourself in the Social Boardroom to get a drink and watch a game, look for a hidden door behind which, you will find The Madam—the resort’s hidden speakeasy. Exuding the charm of the Prohibition era, The Madam is a spot where patrons can savor expertly crafted cocktails in an intimate and mysterious setting.
Bespoke Inn Scottsdale
For those looking for an intimate boutique hotel experience, the Bespoke Inn Scottsdale is a delightful choice. With just four suites and six guest rooms, this charming boutique inn offers casual luxury and personalized service. Guests can enjoy beautifully appointed rooms, a serene courtyard, and the signature infinity-edge pool. The inn’s restaurant, Virtù Honest Craft, is a local favorite known for its inventive Mediterranean cuisine and my favorite brunch spot in town. Additionally, Bespoke Inn has expanded its unique hospitality experience with outposts in Flagstaff and Pine, offering the same luxury and charm in more tranquil, wooded settings.
PRO TIP: The Bespoke Inn offers British Pashley bicycles for guests to use and spend time hitting some of Old Town Scottsdale’s hot restaurants and bars. Or you can cruise down the canal. Or both?
The Global Ambassador
The Global Ambassador is a new, splashy addition to the Phoenix luxury hotel scene, offering a sophisticated and modern stay. With its chic design, international flair, and top-notch amenities, it’s quickly becoming a favorite among discerning travelers. Guests can enjoy world-class dining, a luxurious spa, and unparalleled service. Foodies will love the five signature restaurants: Le Âme Parisian Steakhouse for steak frites, théa for Mediterranean treats and spaghetti alla nerano, the Pink Dolphin for poolside tacos, Le Market for morning coffee and croissants, and the Lobby Bar for some of the best people watching in town.
PRO TIP: The scene is so wildly popular that on the weekend evenings, one is only allowed in the hotel if you are a guest or have a restaurant reservation.
Caesars Republic Scottsdale
Another exciting newcomer, Caesars Republic Scottsdale, brings the legendary Caesars brand to the Valley. In fact, this is the first of its kind: a luxury Caesars hotel not associated with a casino. This resort combines contemporary style with the excitement of the Caesars name, offering upscale accommodations, a rooftop pool, and various dining and entertainment options, including Giada de Laurentius’ Luna by Giada and Pronto by Giada. It’s perfect for combining luxury with a vibrant social scene.
PRO TIP: While you may not lose money gambling here, you may lose money shopping across the parking lot at the Scottsdale Fashion Square, Scottsdale’s mall with brand names like Dior, Prada. Louis Vuitton, Bottega Veneta, and Cartier, so bring your credit cards.
Coming Soon: The Ritz-Carlton, Paradise Valley
Exciting news for luxury travelers: The Ritz-Carlton is set to open a new resort in Paradise Valley. Expected to debut in 2025, this resort offers the ultimate luxury and service, with stunning views, exquisite dining options, and world-class amenities. I heard a rumor that, at one point, French luxury house Hermès was looking to open a store at the Ritz. Watch for this new addition to the Valley’s luxury hotel scene…it should be exciting to see how it will set itself apart from our in-demand resort scene.
Elsewhere in the Valley: Read about my staycation in Chandler here, where I was invited to stay at the Marriott Phoenix Chandler, which is a great option if you need to be in the southeast part of the Valley.
